VANCOUVER -- Roberto Luongo made 19 saves for his third shutout of the season and the 65th of his career Friday as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-0 for their sixth straight victory. After losing a shutout bid in the dying seconds of Sundays win over the Colorado Avalanche, Luongo would not be denied against the punchless Oilers and is now just one back of Patrick Roy for 14th on the all-time list. Daniel Sedin, Zack Kassian, Chris Higgins and Dale Weise scored for Vancouver (19-10-5), which improved to 4-0-0 on its current five-game homestand. Jason Garrison added three assists, while Ryan Kesler chipped in with two of his own. Devan Dubnyk made 36 saves for Edmonton (11-20-3), which has lost two straight. The Canucks dont have long to celebrate with the Boston Bruins set to play at Rogers Arena on Saturday night for the first time since their victory in Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup final. Leading 1-0 after the second period, Vancouver doubled its lead at 2:26 of the third when Kassian deflected a shot from David Booth past Dubnyk for his sixth goal of the season and first point in nine games. Higgins then stretched the lead to three at 6:07 when he took a feed from Ryan Kesler and beat Dubnyk with a lightning-quick release for his ninth of the campaign. Higgins now has two goals and five assists during his four-game point streak. Luongo made a big glove stop on Oilers defenceman Justin Schultz midway through the period before Weise had a chance to make it 4-0, only to see his shot hit the post. Luongo then shot out his left pad on Edmonton forward Ryan Jones to preserve the shutout with under six minutes remaining. Weise finally found the mark on the power play with 34.8 seconds left on the clock for his third of the season. After a scoreless first that saw the Canucks carry the play, Vancouver came out strong again in the second and took the lead on a 4-on-3 power play midway through the period. Implored by Canucks head coach John Tortorella this week to shoot more, Sedin snapped a five-game goalless drought with his 11th of the season when his shot from the point went in off Oilers defenceman Nick Schultz at 8:41. Higgins had just hit the post behind Dubnyk moments earlier, with Edmontons Mark Arcobello going off for slashing to give Vancouver the man advantage. The goal energized the Oilers, who were playing their second game in as many nights, with Luongo robbing David Perron with his glove a few minutes later. Weise and Kesler then found themselves in alone on Dubnyk on a 2-on-0, but the Oilers goalie stopped Kesler. Vancouver beat Edmonton 6-2 at Rogers Arena on Oct. 5 and came out firing in the first period on Friday. The Canucks hemmed the Oilers in their own zone off the opening faceoff and led 6-0 on the shot clock when Edmontons Ryan Nugent-Hopkins finally directed his teams first effort at Luongo with just under seven minutes gone. Dubnyk, who was pulled after giving up three goals in Thursdays 4-2 home loss to Boston, had to be sharp a few moments later with big stops on Kassian and Jannik Hansen. Not to be outdone, Luongo kept out Edmontons best chance of the period with a sprawling stick save off Ales Hemsky on a 2-on-1. The Oilers had the only power play of the period when Canucks captain Henrik Sedin was whistled for goaltender interference with under four minutes to go, but Vancouvers No. 1-ranked penalty killing unit had the best chance when Dubnyk just got a piece of Keslers effort. I see myself as a guy that can compete against the guys that are there. At the same time, theres a lot of guys having a strong season right now. For me, its more important to get the results right now.Chris Kreider scored one goal and set up Martin St. Louis for another for the Rangers, who have 13 wins in 14 games for the first time since 1973. That includes wins in a four-day span at Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Jose — the first time New York has even beaten those three teams on the road in the same season.Rick Nash added an empty-net goal to seal it.It was a great answering of the bell, Nash said. We talked about it for the three days before we came out here that this was going to be a gritty task and I thought we played great. Its impressive to get these three wins. At the same point, its just three wins.Melker Karlsson joined Jeff Friesen as the only Sharks rookies to score goals in five straight games when he converted on the power play in the third period. Antti Niemi made 28 saves.Even the return of Joe Thornton couldnt help the Sharks, who were coming off a second 7-2 loss to St. Louis in a six-day span. Thornton missed four games with a shoulder injury and the power play looked impotent in his absence with one goal on 19 attempts.San Jose looked sharp on its first power play against the Rangers in the first period, but couldnt get anything past Lundqvist, who responded to his All-Star game snub by reaching 20 wins for a 10th straight season.Thats the waay it went for most of the night as Lundqvist was outstanding, including getting a piece of Joe Pavelskis shot from alone in the slot midway through the second to keep the game 2-0.dddddddddddd.We didnt finish our chances, Pavelski said. We played hard, but it came down to a couple of things, execution on certain things. The Rangers missed a chance to add to the lead early in the third when Niemi made a spectacular glove save along the goal line to rob Mats Zuccarello. The play went under a lengthy replay review before being upheld to the dismay of the Rangers.Pucks in the mitt, mitts in the net, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. Ill let you use your common sense. The Sharks then converted on the power play just minutes later when Karlsson knocked in a rebound of James Sheppards shot for the Sharks lone goal. The game marked the return to San Jose for defenceman Dan Boyle, who became the franchises career leader in points by a defenceman in his six years with the Sharks. Boyle got a bloody nose on his opening shift and had to go to the locker room. But he was back later in the first for a video tribute that was followed by a long ovation and stick tapping from both teams. It was an amazing moment, he said. It was just a minute long, but thats going to stay with me for a lifetime. The Rangers took nearly 10 minutes to get their first shot on goal, but still ended up ahead 2-0 after the first period when they scored after faceoffs in the offensive zone.Kreider set up the first when he tapped a loose puck to St. Louis, who knocked it in from the slot to make it 1-0.Later in the period, Kreider tipped a shot by Dan Girardi on goal after a faceoff win by Stepan and then tapped in the rebound.NOTES: Nash and Sharks D Brent Burns were picked for the All-Star game. ...
